Dandie's first class, Knitting Madness!!!, was awesome!
Jen B, Sarah and Brad got extra special knitting lessons from our amazing teachers:
Sarah T and Bee.
Jen B. had never knitted before, and by the end of the class,
she'd already knitted a gazillion rows of knits and purls.
Sarah needed a refresher on how to cast on, but once she re-learned that, she was off!
Brad was also a novice knitter, and by the end he was so enthused he wanted to go out and get the recommended beginner's books.

to show you all some new stuff. We finally took some pics and even dowloaded the ones from the craft fair back in September. So, get ready!

Monster hats by Anne. They come in tons of colors and sizes, from babies to adults.

Our mascot Dandie ladies dressed with scarflettes by Ashley, a Baby E headband, a knit hat by Kelsey, and big blue earrings by Ali. They're a bit crazy.

A wall full of accessories from button necklaces and earrings, shrinky-dink necklaces and earrings, tweed pins, etc.

Some dolls and creatures, ReWAX candles, an origami mobile, cupcake pincushions, and felted cake boxes.

A case full of Punkette dolls, Paddington Sweet's Mod-ern Chocolates, and origami gift boxes.

Then some more stuffies and cuties.

Next, onto the Mass Market craft fair. Our table was layered and layered with so many items from many of the artists in the shop. I think we pulled it all together though, it has the look of the shop but just on one surface.

That is the adorable Ashley, who helped us out the whole day and informed us about the fair. She's the sweetest. She's one of our wonderful volunteers and is the face behind the scarflettes.

There are cards and Cara Taylor recycled plastic bag purses. Cherry Winter's animal creatures, and button necklaces. Wallets and ipod holders. Bookends, crayons, and notepads made from recylced paper. Earrings, mirrors, and monster kits. Soap, bath salts, and aprons. Sleep masks, hats, and cuffs.
The list goes on.

Then here's a pic of the space with some shoppers.

One of our awesome volunteers, Carrie, makes the cutest felt items among other amazing things that she sells with us. She has a blog, teeny.tiny.cute, where she shows some of her items.

Here are the stuffed candy corns that she made, some act as zipper-pulls. I think this is such a great idea. Then there's the little bats. Unfortunately, we sold all of these, but she does work on commission as do many of the other artists selling with us.

They were intended to be with us only for Halloween, but why can't candy corn be a year-round love, right?

One of the biggest challenges we've found is that most of the items in our shop are for women. There are a few unisex things, but primarily people get the sense that it's gender-specific. Many of the artists selling with us try to come up with products for men but it's more difficult.
Hopefully this will change.

Saying that, I posted about the Handmade Pledge a couple weeks ago that is floating around the web. I really want to sign it and hope all of you do too to support indie designers/crafters. But I know for myself, I was having a hard time committing to signing it because buying handmade for the men in my life is a bit more difficult.

So to my happiness, the Modish blog posted a great handmade gift guide for men today. Check it out.

And, then take that pledge....look to your right and click on it!

Yes, it's true. We have tons of new product in the shop and lots of winter goods; hats and scarves. We also have more clothes and a few new artists selling with us. I wish I had pictures to show you all right now, but unfortunately I do not. You'll have to trust me that there's lots of wonderful items to come in and see.

Tomorrow night, The Sierra Grille, in Northampton is having a special Halloween costume gig. They've been doing gigs Thursday night, but changed this week because of Halloween.

Prizes will be given away for best costume, one of which will be a gift certificate from us! So, get those creative minds flowing and go dressed for the occasion.

CHERRY WINTERS

We recently got some new stuffed creatures from Cherry Winters, and we're getting even more this week. They are graphite and watercolor crayon on mulberry paper, varnished and hand-sewn. We'll be filled with bunnies, chickens, horses, 2 elephants, manatees, and some steak & cheese.

The Art Parlor wrote a nice blurb about her work seen at the Easthampton Art Walk last weekend. They mentioned us too!

As many of you know, attached to the Dandie in the Underworld boutique is a studio space. It's filled with piles of community supplies that are free to any of our volunteers to use. We pretty much have anything you can think of from: colored pencils, markers, crayons, fabric paints, spray paint to fabric and clothes that can be reconstructed, fake flowers, beads, buttons, a fully functional sewing machine.....etc, etc. It is a small space and as most studios, tends to get a bit messy, but that's the nature of the space!

So we decided since we have so much in there and we want some more creative energy flowing in there we would like to offer it to any/all of you for an hourly fee of only $5/hr. The only catch is that you can't take any of the supplies with you and we would prefer if things you work on were inspired to sell in the shop. They don't have to be but it would be cool if they were. So maybe you don't have a space to work or can't afford to sign a lease and pay monthly rent, or just need a change of scenery. You'll have full access to all of the supplies in the studio and a place to go to create.

Or if you want, we can still use volunteers to work on the boutique side too....where there is a lot of down time so most likely you'll have studio time then and won't have to pay the $5/hr. We're also thinking that if some of you are interested in volunteering but not for our traditional open hours (thurs-sun, noon-10) then you can still come in and have the shop open on off hours. It can only help business to be open more anyway!

If this interests any of you or if you have any questions, let us know. I'm going to try to set up a calendar so times don't overlay.

SPARKLE COOKIE

On Sunday we got a ton of brand new bath goodies by a new seller for us, Sparkle Cookie. Not only do they smell great, they're also so fun.

We have these lotion bars made with mango butter, shea butter and cocoa butter, which are packaged in cupcake wrappers! There's a variety of smells too, from white chocolate to sweet lavender.

Next comes Sparkle Fluff, which are moisturizing salt scrubs. They exfoliate, moisturize, and sparkle, and again come in a wide variety of sweet smells.

Then we have the foaming antibacterial hand soaps in bright colors and scents!

And then, my personal favorite are the bath melts that come packaged like a box of truffles. We have the multi-packs so they have different scents but they all contain cocoa butter, almond oil, fragrance and fizz. What's more fun than a fizzy bath?

ReWax

Kelsey Flynn who interviewed us right before we opened the shop just interviewed Michael Sjostedt, the man behind ReWax. He makes the small votive candles that we sell out of recycled wax, and he has a pretty great philosophy behind his whole product line as well. In his words, "I just like to see how you can take a "waste" product and make into a "new" product, or create a new use out of a waste."

Now doesn't that sound like a product we would be interested in selling! Read more here and come in for all of your candle needs.

I finally got around to taking some more product shots. I know finally! There are always new items coming in the shop....so here's a slim selection of some of them. But you really need to stop in to see what I mean!

A few of these products are great examples of recycling a material into something completely new and improved. I really love that.

These are wallets made from recycled billboard material.....pretty cool, i know. The lovely Plum made them, she's in the band Thrillpillow that will be playing at the September 8th gig at the Eagles too.

Here are some ReWax candles, made out of recycled candle wax. They come in a variety of colors...come and get em!

You know those beer and soda bottles that you have lying around, how about making them into juice glasses instead of just getting your 5¢ back? That's what Kelsey did....and they're pretty irresistible.

Next are these Big Sky earrings. My favorite part is that they are all very slightly mismatched.

Some flower pins in a variety of sizes and colors.

Fall is coming, and what is better than sporting a scarflette made by Ashley who you may have also seen working on Fridays for us! The styles are different, the colors are different, and they're all so cute.

Sitting in an abundant pile are a mixture of tins for pretty much anything you can think of, made by Jenny Lisa.

Mark your calendars, we're throwing a Dandie party at the Eagles club in Northampton on Saturday September 8th! We're hoping for it to be a time where all of the artists involved in the shop can be in one place while enjoying some fabulous music at the same time. So far we have two very talented local bands on the bill for the night with hopefully one more to come.

Sitting Next to Brian will be performing, as well as The Novels. For any of you who don't know them, you are missing out. It will be an amazing night....I can not control my excitement!

This will also be a chance to support your local indie craft boutique! There is a standard $5 cover at the Eagles club, and the two bands involved have agreed that all profits will support keeping us up and running.
